Winter Window
When is the Best Time to Photograph?
There is a best time to photograph. The tough part is finding out when that is. I am fond of saying that there are only two important things in photography; knowing where to stand and when to press the shutter. Figuring out the best time to photograph requires patience, observational skills maybe some visualization and a lot more patience. One has to spend the time just watching the scene determining when the light cooperates with the photographer’s intentions for his photograph.
I’m in the middle of a project exploring this right now. About ten years ago we remodeled part of our house and added a window on the south wall of our house. We get direct sunlight through the window only during the winter months. We had no idea this would happen, but it certainly adds a lot to dispel winter gloom. When I first thought about photographing this window, I puzzled about when the light would be “best” for “the” photograph. The photograph above is what I came up with as “the best.”
Next week – How I got there.
